Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has instructed the State Director General of Police (DGP) to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the death of singer and Assam cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
Garg, 52, passed away in Singapore on September 19 following an alleged drowning incident during the North East India Festival. His body was flown to Delhi and later brought to Guwahati on Sunday morning.
The SIT will function with full autonomy to ensure a professional and thorough investigation. Viscera samples have been sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL) in Delhi for detailed analysis, CM Sarma said.
On Tuesday, a second post-mortem was conducted at Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) in the presence of AIIMS doctors. Garg’s remains were kept at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex before being moved for the final rites.
Zubeen Garg was cremated with full state honours on Tuesday at Kamarkuchi, on the outskirts of Guwahati. Thousands of fans attended, with his sister Palme Borthakur performing the final rites and his wife Garima Saikia in attendance. A gun salute was also accorded as part of state honours.
Following the incident, CM Sarma announced that Shyamkanu Mahanta, the main organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, has been barred from conducting any events in Assam. The state government will not provide financial support, sponsorship, or advertisements for any events linked to him, and a request will be made to the Government of India to withhold assistance.
Multiple FIRs have been registered against Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma and Shyamkanu Mahanta. The CID has been tasked with investigating all related cases.
