Guwahati Jan 30: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary, observed across India as Martyrs’ Day.
In a post on X, Sarma remembered the Father of the Nation and said Gandhi’s life and ideals continue to guide the country. He stated that Assam has taken several measures inspired by Gandhi’s principles of Gram Swaraj and non-violence to support peaceful development driven by rural areas.
The chief minister reiterated the state’s commitment to rural self-governance and non-violence as key pillars for Assam’s progress.
Meanwhile, an official function is scheduled to be held at Mahatma Gandhi Smriti Sthal at Rajghat in New Delhi, where several dignitaries are expected to attend. In view of the event, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory announcing heightened security arrangements and traffic regulations in central Delhi from 9 am to 12 noon.
Traffic diversions may be implemented at several locations, including ITO Chowk, Delhi Gate, Guru Nanak Chowk, Shantivan Chowk, Rajghat DTC Depot and IP Flyover. Stretches likely to be affected include BSZ Marg from ITO Chowk to Delhi Gate, Shantivan Chowk to IP Flyover, and Asaf Ali Road from Delhi Gate to NS Marg, among others.
Commuters have been advised to use public transport, follow traffic instructions, park vehicles only at designated places, and report any suspicious activity by dialling 112.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, at Birla House in New Delhi, now known as Gandhi Smriti.
