Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled a statue of freedom fighter Mangal Pandey at Ghungoor in Silchar, commemorating his pivotal role in the 1857 revolt, which marked the beginning of India’s struggle for independence.
Speaking at the event, Sarma highlighted the significance of the Sepoy Mutiny, stating that the bravery of soldiers like Pandey inspired Indians to assert their right to freedom and laid the groundwork for future independence movements.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister also released books on Mangal Pandey, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, and saints Srimanta Sankardeva and Sri Sri Madhavdev.
Later, Sarma visited the historic Silchar Tennis Club, interacted with trainees, and reviewed the club’s facilities.
Mangal Pandey, remembered as a forerunner of India’s freedom struggle, led a revolt at the Barrackpore military camp on March 29, 1857, and was executed on April 8, 1857, at the age of 30.
