Guwahati, April 9: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, contesting from the Jalukbari assembly constituency, cast his vote today in Guwahati for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. He was accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma and their two children.
Sarma, who has represented Jalukbari since 2001, is seeking a third consecutive term in office while leading the NDA campaign in the state. Before exercising his franchise, he offered prayers at several shrines, including the Kamakhya Temple.
Speaking to reporters after voting, Sarma said, “Today is the election day for Assam. Weather is very good. I believe that people will come out and vote in large number for the development of Assam.”
Polling is underway across all 126 constituencies in a single phase, with more than 2.5 crore voters eligible to cast their ballots. The Election Commission has deployed security forces and enabled webcasting at every polling booth to ensure transparency. The electoral fate of 722 candidates will be decided, with counting scheduled for May 4.
