Guwahati, Sep 27: The Assam government has issued lookout notices against Siddharth Sharma, manager of late singer Zubeen Garg, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday. The notices are part of the ongoing investigation into Garg’s death on September 19 in Singapore while swimming during the festival trip.

CM Sarma has set a deadline of October 6 for both individuals to appear in Guwahati and provide statements to the CID, which is probing the circumstances of Garg’s drowning. He urged public patience during the ongoing Durga Puja festival and warned that non-compliance will result in intensified police action, while Sharma and Mahanta may also pursue legal recourse.

Sarma said Mahanta’s bank accounts and credit facilities have been frozen, limiting his ability to stay abroad. The post-mortem at Gauhati Medical College is complete, while the Singapore autopsy report is awaited. A judicial commission led by a sitting judge has been requested from the Gauhati High Court to ensure oversight and transparency in the investigation.

The Chief Minister also assured Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the case would be handed over to the CBI if Assam Police fail to ensure justice for Garg. He appealed for public calm and cautioned against attempts to politicize the tragedy, referencing recent unrest in Nepal following a social media ban.

Police raids at Sharma and Mahanta’s residences found neither individual, and Sharma’s family is reportedly missing since Garg’s death. The situation has triggered angry fan protests, including clashes with law enforcement and a reported incident of a fan jumping off a bridge in grief.
