Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is personally supervising the investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg, describing it as a matter of national importance. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the CM’s involvement reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring justice.
Garg died 13 days ago in a scuba diving accident in Singapore. His body was brought first to Delhi and then to Guwahati on September 21. BJP spokesperson Kalyan Gogoi said the inquiry will be conducted with full transparency and in accordance with the law, emphasizing that no one in Assam will be allowed to evade accountability.
The party also urged citizens to trust the investigative process and avoid actions that could obstruct justice, and thanked the people of Assam for their confidence in the government.
Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East Music Festival in Singapore, and Siddharth Sharma, Garg’s manager, were sent to 14 days’ police custody by the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate. They are being questioned at the CID office in Guwahati under heavy security.
Assamese actress Nishita Goswami and co-musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami appeared before the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on September 27 in connection with the case. The Assam CID has registered Case No. 18/2025 under Sections 61(2)/105/106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, treating the death as suspicious. The investigation is ongoing.
