Assam: Congress Releases Candidate List For Bodoland Territorial Council Polls

The Congress on Sunday released its complete list of candidates for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections in Assam, finalising nominees for all 40 constituencies.

The party had earlier announced 31 candidates on Saturday night and added nine more names on Sunday evening, completing its slate for the September 22 polls in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Notable candidates from the first list include Ranchana Basumatary, Rananjay Narzary, Kwrwm Mushahry, Sahar Ali, Dwimu Roje, Matilal Basumatary, Sunil Narzary, Rajib Basumatary, Enos Iswary, Amoiyo Narzary, Agostin Narzary, Abhinash Brahma, Safiur Rahman, Buddhadev Phadangary, Jagadish Madahi, Bubul Das, and Dharmeswar Baro.

The second list includes Sahen Chandra Brahma, Abu Bakkar Ali, Rafikul Islam Sheikh, Mohini Mohan Basumatary, Sanjib Warie, Binimoy Basumatary, Zamser Ali, Bhebendra Nath Swargiary, and Petrus Bagh.

The BTC is currently controlled by the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), an NDA ally, which is seeking a second consecutive term. The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) is also contesting to regain power, while the BJP is contesting independently to form its first government in the council.

The last date for filing nominations is September 2, with scrutiny on September 4. Candidates may withdraw their nominations until September 6. Polling will be held on September 22 across 40 constituencies in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur, and Udalguri districts at 3,359 polling stations, covering 26,57,937 voters, including 13,23,399 men, 13,34,521 women, and 17 third-gender voters. Counting of votes is scheduled for September 26, with repolling, if required, on September 24.
