Guwahati, Dec 31: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] will hold its 24th state conference in Guwahati from January 5 to 7. During the three-day event, the party will focus on formulating strategies for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections and discussing critical political and socio-economic issues facing the state.

CPI(M) Assam State Secretary Suprakash Talukdar announced that approximately 325 delegates, representing 10,973 party members, will attend the conference. The event will review the current political landscape of Assam and outline the party’s agenda for the next three years, particularly with regard to the upcoming elections.

This conference, held after a three-year hiatus, will also elect new leadership for the party’s Assam operations. Talukdar emphasized that the CPI(M) will work towards isolating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), criticizing its policies that have, according to the party, worsened the economic conditions of the people. He pointed to rising prices, stagnant incomes, and high unemployment rates as major concerns.

In addition, Talukdar raised issues in Assam’s agricultural sector, where 70% of the population is employed. He noted the increasing cost of farming, lack of fair prices for crops, and a decline in irrigation coverage, which has resulted in a decrease in the number of farmers in rural areas.

The conference will begin with a rally at Fancy Bazaar along the Brahmaputra River, with key leaders including former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, CPI(M) politburo members Subhashini Ali and Nilotpal Basu, along with the state leadership, in attendance.
