Guwahati, Jan 19: Guwahati Police detained social media commentator Sikha Sarma on Monday following a complaint by singer Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, over allegedly derogatory Facebook posts.
Garima filed the complaint with the Crime Branch, accusing Sarma of making objectionable remarks targeting Zubeen Garg, his sister-in-law, and father-in-law. The posts reportedly caused widespread outrage among fans and the public.
“We received the complaint and immediately sent a team to question the accused,” said Guwahati Police DCP (Crime) Debajit Nath. An FIR has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
Garima said she initially ignored the comments but decided to take action as they crossed a limit, alleging that the posts amounted to defamation, criminal intimidation, hate speech, and potential provocation of communal unrest.
Separately, members of the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fan Club also visited Dispur police station to lodge a complaint. “While the public unites for justice related to Zubeen, Sarma is diverting the issue,” said fan club president Piku Borgohain.
Zubeen Garg, a cultural icon of Assam, continues to enjoy widespread public support as the controversy unfolds.
