Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday asserted that the state is on course to become a ₹10 lakh crore economy by 2028. Addressing the Assam Legislative Assembly, he pointed out that the Gross State Domestic Product has grown from ₹4 lakh crore in 2021–22 to a projected ₹8.72 lakh crore in 2026, marking an annual growth rate between 13 and 15 percent.

Sarma stressed that this pace of expansion positions Assam to play a significant role in advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a $5 trillion national economy. The Ministry of Finance recently reported that between 2014 and 2026, Assam received ₹5.61 lakh crore in tax devolution and central grants.

In addition, more than ₹17,000 crore has been released under the Scheme of Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure, providing 50-year interest-free loans beyond Finance Commission recommendations. From FY 2020 to January 2026, Assam secured ₹17,104 crore under this scheme, enabling extensive infrastructure and asset creation.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora introduced “The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026” in the Assembly on Monday on behalf of the Chief Minister. The Bill is scheduled for discussion and possible passage on May 27.
