Guwahati, Jun 4: The flood situation in Assam worsened on Wednesday following continuous rainfall, which led to a rise in water levels and inundation of new areas, according to official reports.
Over 6.5 lakh people across several districts have been affected, as per data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Seven rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are currently flowing above the danger mark in multiple locations. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in the coming days.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are likely to hit districts such as Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, and Kokrajhar, the RMC stated.
Authorities have launched relief and rescue operations in the affected areas and are closely monitoring the situation.
