Assam Floods: Death Toll Reaches 11; Over 5.15 Lakh People Affected In 22 Districts

Guwahati, Jun 3 : The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with the death toll rising to 11 due to floods and landslides, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Of the total fatalities, six people died in flood-related incidents, while five others were killed in landslides.

Over 5.15 lakh people have been affected across 22 districts. In the past 24 hours, one person drowned in Hojai district, and two others were reported missing in Hailakandi and Dibrugarh.

As of June 2, floods have impacted 1,254 villages under 65 revenue circles in the districts of Hailakandi, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Sribhumi, Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh, Morigaon, Kamrup, Cachar, Golaghat, Darrang, Majuli, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Kamrup (Metro), Karbi Anglong West, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Sonitpur, Dima Hasao, and Sivasagar.

The Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, along with several tributaries, are flowing above danger levels at multiple locations including Neamatighat, Tezpur, Badatighat, Numaligarh, Kampur, Fulertal, and Sribhumi.

Floodwaters have submerged 12,610.27 hectares of cropland. Sribhumi remains the worst-affected district, with over 1.94 lakh people impacted. Other severely affected districts include Cachar (77,961), Nagaon (67,880), Lakhimpur (47,127), Hailakandi (30,234), Dibrugarh (20,179), and Tinsukia (19,289).

A total of 1.85 lakh people have taken shelter in 322 relief camps and distribution centres set up by district administrations.

According to ASDMA, 4,67,851 animals have been affected, and 94 have been washed away in the last 24 hours.

Infrastructure has also been damaged, with 49 roads, four bridges, and three embankments either damaged or breached due to floodwaters.

Heavy rainfall continues across the northeastern region, affecting Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, with reports of floods, landslides, and rising river levels.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 1 assured all necessary assistance to the flood-affected states. He also spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as the Governor of Manipur.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in a bulletin issued on May 2, forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across the northeastern states for the next two days, with a likely decrease in intensity thereafter. Heavy rainfall has been recorded in Nagaland, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Tripura.
