Nalbari, Dec 26: Four people were arrested after St. Mary’s English School in Nalbari district of Assam was vandalised on Christmas Eve, police said on Thursday.
According to the police, the incident took place on Wednesday evening when the accused entered the school premises and damaged outdoor decorations, street lights, plant pots and other property. Some items were also set on fire. A case has been registered at Belsor police station, and further investigation is underway.
Reacting to the incident, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi criticised the vandalism and termed it an attack on social harmony. He appealed to people to maintain unity and not be provoked by such acts.
Meanwhile, Christmas was celebrated across the country with religious prayers and public gatherings. In West Bengal, Kolkata’s Park Street witnessed large crowds, while celebrations were also held in Lucknow’s Hazratganj area, Jammu’s St. Mary’s Garrison Church and Manali’s Mall Road. Markets and public spaces were decorated with lights, Christmas trees and festive ornaments as people marked the birth of Jesus Christ.
