Assam is set to celebrate the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika with a series of cultural programmes across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a high-level review meeting on Thursday to finalise arrangements for the celebrations.

The festivities will begin on September 8 with floral tributes at Hazarika’s memorial in Jalukbari, alongside cultural events organised simultaneously across Assam. The main centenary programme is scheduled for September 13, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join during his two-day visit to the state. Hazarika’s son, Tez Hazarika, joined the meeting virtually and will attend as a state guest.

CM Sarma emphasised that the celebrations should reflect Hazarika’s significant influence on Indian music, culture, and society. He also noted that the Government of India has approved a ₹100 silver commemorative coin in his honour, describing it as a lasting tribute to the legendary musician.

The centenary plans include outreach initiatives, special publications, and cultural showcases in Assam as well as in Arunachal Pradesh, Kolkata, New Delhi, and Mumbai. The foundation stone for a museum dedicated to Hazarika will also be laid during the centenary year.

Expressing gratitude to the Arunachal Pradesh government, CM Sarma acknowledged Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein for initiating celebrations in Roing on September 26. He urged the state’s cultural affairs department to work closely with stakeholders to ensure the programmes evolve into a people’s movement, celebrating Hazarika’s message of harmony through music.
