Guwahati, Jan 9: Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Thursday said the Centre aims to create seven crore jobs in the textile sector by 2030–31, alongside increasing exports and promoting new-age fibres. He made the statement at the two-day National Textiles Ministers’ Conference 2026, which began in Guwahati under the theme “India’s Textiles: Weaving Growth, Heritage and Innovation.”

Addressing the conference, Singh said discussions would focus on exports, innovation, infrastructure, and future-ready fibres. He said the objective was to strengthen the textile sector through coordinated efforts between the Centre and states.

Singh also commented on participation at the conference, noting that ministers from non-NDA states were largely absent despite invitations being sent to all states. He described the low attendance as unfortunate.

During his remarks, Singh referred to the development initiatives of Assam and made political comments concerning West Bengal. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at the event.

The conference aims to promote holistic growth of the textile industry, with sessions covering raw materials, technical textiles, sustainability, skill development, environmental compliance, and flagship initiatives such as PM MITRA Parks.

A special conclave held on January 8 focused on textiles from the Northeast, including Eri, Muga and Mulberry silk, women-led enterprises, and improving market access for regional products.

Union Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, senior officials from the Centre and states, and industry representatives attended the conference. An exhibition showcasing India’s textile heritage was also organised. Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the Handloom and Handicraft Exhibition during the event.
