Guwahati, Mar 2: The Assam government is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to gather details on residents from the state who are living or stranded in West Asia amid escalating tensions.
A senior official, speaking anonymously to PTI on Sunday, revealed that the state currently lacks specific figures on its citizens in the region. “We are in constant touch with the MEA and working to compile information on people from Assam in West Asia,” the officer said. “Data collection is ongoing, and we will share updates as they become available.”
Assam natives are employed across various sectors in West Asia, such as aviation and business, though no official numbers are yet confirmed.
The outreach follows a major joint US-Israel attack on Iran on Saturday, which resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei early Sunday. Iran’s retaliatory actions have led to widespread airspace closures, disrupting hundreds of flights across West Asia and beyond, including routes to India.
