Guwahati, Jun 23: The Assam Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved the issuance of Transgender Identity Cards to individuals who are original inhabitants of the state.

The decision comes alongside the Cabinet’s approval to classify the transgender community in Assam as a Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC), enabling them to access various government schemes and welfare initiatives. The identity cards will be issued by the respective Deputy Commissioners.
