Guwahati, May 10: The Assam government has introduced the “Eti Koli Duti Paat” scheme, offering a one-time financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to each permanent and temporary labourer working in the state’s tea gardens. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the scheme on Saturday, marking the 200th anniversary of Assam tea.

The initiative is aimed at supporting the workers who are integral to Assam’s globally renowned tea industry. Assam produces approximately 700 million kg of tea annually, contributing to about half of India’s total tea production.

Additionally, Chief Minister Sarma revealed that Dibrugarh airport would be renamed in honor of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary Assamese singer and cultural icon. A special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be convened next month to officially recognize this decision.

In light of the current geopolitical tensions, the state government will also cut back on spending for seminars, events, and foreign travel for ministers and officials. The government has also decided to halt new vehicle purchases and promote virtual meetings to reduce expenses.
