Guwahati, May 26: The Assam government has announced an incentive package worth Rs 25,000 crore to encourage electronic components manufacturers to set up units in the state, offering additional benefits over central government schemes.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday, after a meeting with industry representatives in New Delhi, that Assam will provide up to 60 percent extra incentives on top of the central government’s policy. The state will also offer GST rebates and support for social infrastructure and power ecosystem development.

This follows the Union Cabinet’s approval of the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme in March, which allocated Rs 22,919 crore to strengthen India’s electronics supply chain. Assam released its own manufacturing policy soon after.

Manufacturers setting up units in Assam will benefit from three schemes: the central government’s policy, Assam’s state policy, and the North East-focused UNNATI scheme, aimed at promoting industrialisation and employment in the region.

Regarding the Tata semiconductor plant under construction in Jagiroad, the Chief Minister said production is expected to begin by late 2025 or early 2026. The Rs 27,000 crore facility is expected to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily.

Assam is also developing an electronics manufacturing city named Ratan Tata Electronics Manufacturing City near the semiconductor plant to support industry growth.

CM Sarma urged industry leaders to take advantage of Assam’s improving infrastructure—including roads, railways, and logistics—to overcome geographical challenges.

He added that sufficient funds are available to facilitate infrastructure development for these projects.

The state’s electronics manufacturing sector has attracted international attention, with a 52-member delegation led by the Speaker of Japan’s National Assembly recently visiting Assam.
