Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday reiterated the Assam government’s commitment to fully cooperate with the Judicial Commission investigating the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

The commission, led by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, has begun its inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death. In a post on X, Sarma termed the formation of the Judicial Commission a landmark step toward ensuring transparency and justice. He urged all concerned to extend complete cooperation with the inquiry process.

The Chief Minister also stated that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) handling the criminal probe would submit its chargesheet by December 8. He confirmed that the individuals arrested in connection with the case are in judicial custody and have been charged with murder.

“People are under judicial custody and being forwarded in a case of murder. This has been the position from day one,” Sarma said, adding that the police are legally bound to submit a chargesheet within 90 days in murder cases or offences carrying life imprisonment.

Zubeen Garg was found dead on September 19 after allegedly drowning in a swimming pool in Singapore, where he had travelled to perform at the Northeast India Festival.
