Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said his government will welcome the Election Commission’s initiative to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the state.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an official event here, Sarma said the state government would fully cooperate with whatever directions are issued by the Election Commission. “I don’t know the topic of the press meet. However, whatever instruction we receive from the EC, we will work accordingly,” he said.

The Election Commission is expected to announce details of the SIR during a press conference in New Delhi later in the day, with around 10 to 15 states likely to be included in the first phase.

“If SIR is announced nationwide, definitely we will welcome it. We have already conveyed our view to the central government in this regard,” Sarma added.

The upcoming revision is expected to cover states heading to assembly polls in 2026, including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry.
