Assam has made its mark in India’s semiconductor initiative with the unveiling of two indigenous chips at Semicon India 2025. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Tata OSAT Chip and the Neural Amplifier Frontend IC, developed by researchers at NIT Silchar, were included in the first batch of made-in-India chips.
Sarma said the achievement represents a significant step in Assam’s contribution to India’s goal of becoming a global hub for semiconductors.
The unveiling comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation in March 2024 for four major semiconductor projects worth ₹1.25 lakh crore, one of which is located in Morigaon district of Assam.
In a related development, the Tata Group began construction on August 3, 2024, of a ₹27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and testing facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon. The plant, expected to be operational in 2025, is projected to generate nearly 27,000 jobs.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the Assam facility would serve as a key part of India’s semiconductor roadmap, supporting innovation and creating large-scale employment.
