Guwahati, Jun 3: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma held a high-level meeting on Monday evening at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Guwahati, to discuss key inter-state issues, including the border dispute, a joint power and irrigation project, and measures to address urban flooding in Guwahati.
The leaders reviewed the progress of the Assam-Meghalaya border talks and confirmed that boundary pillars in five of the six resolved areas will be installed by August 15. CM Sarma stated that minor issues in the Pilingkata area remain, while discussions for the remaining six disputed areas are ongoing.
On infrastructure cooperation, the two states agreed to jointly commission a 55 MW power and irrigation project. “We have decided to go ahead jointly with the project,” said CM Sarma.
In response to urban flooding in Guwahati, the Assam government shared a detailed presentation. Both governments agreed to assign the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) to conduct a satellite-based study of flood-prone areas. The findings, expected within three months, will be analysed in collaboration with IIT Roorkee.
CM Sangma said the study will help identify water flow patterns, forest cover, and areas affected by waterlogging, enabling both states to plan effective flood control strategies.
The meeting comes as both Assam and Meghalaya face flood-related challenges following days of continuous rainfall, which has led to overflowing rivers and displacement in several regions.
