Guwahati, Apr 4: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika on Saturday expressed confidence that voters would support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in the upcoming Assembly elections, dismissing backing for the Congress party.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati ahead of the single-phase polling on April 9 for all 126 constituencies, with results scheduled for May 4, Hazarika compared the BJP government’s achievements with those of Congress during its decades-long tenure.

Hazarika highlighted the expansion of medical and educational infrastructure under the BJP, stating, “They built six hospitals in 70 years. We built 16 medical colleges. They built 12 universities; now there are 32,” asserting these developments would contribute to the NDA’s electoral prospects.

He also reiterated the BJP’s push for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, excluding Sixth Schedule areas, stating the aim was to promote a uniform legal framework across the state.

Hazarika further criticized Congress for allegedly politicizing the name of late singer Zubeen Garg and urged the party to apologize to the family. Garg, a prominent Assamese singer, passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, due to drowning while intoxicated off Lazarus Island, according to a coroner’s report.
