Guwahati, Nov 28: Assam Cabinet Minister Bimal Borah on Friday suggested setting up a “detention room” within the Assembly premises to prevent suspended legislators from leaving during their suspension period. The proposal followed the suspension of Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi for interrupting proceedings during the Question Hour.
Borah expressed concern that suspended MLAs often leave the Assembly and share their version of events with the media. “Suspended MLAs should not be allowed to leave the Assembly premises as they go out and place their version of what had transpired in the House,” he said, adding that the detention room could be equipped with necessary facilities.
Akhil Gogoi, known for his vocal opposition, had also been suspended briefly earlier in the Winter Session after entering the Well of the House with a poster of singer Zubeen Garg during an adjournment motion on the artiste’s death.
Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia of Congress urged the Speaker’s office to issue a clear statement explaining the grounds for suspension to avoid misinterpretation. Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary appealed to all members to maintain decorum and cooperate for the smooth conduct of proceedings.
