Guwahati, July 24: A devastating blaze swept through a home in the Guwahati’s Maligaon area early Thursday, claiming the lives of a mother and her daughter and leaving the father critically injured.

The fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. at the Chakraborty family residence. Neighbours raised the alarm after spotting smoke, and firefighters arriving on the scene found 38-year-old Deepsikha Chakraborty and her 12-year-old daughter Sharmistha Chakraborty with fatal burn injuries.

Subrata Chakraborty managed to escape the inferno but sustained serious burns. He was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.

Initial inquiries indicate a possible short circuit as the source of the blaze. Forensic teams and the CID of Assam Police are probing all angles to establish the exact cause of the fire.
