Five Bangladeshi students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar have been suspended and are facing deportation following their alleged involvement in a violent clash on campus, officials said on Monday.
The students, who are enrolled under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship scheme, were accused of attacking fellow students on September 8 using rods, knives, and screwdrivers, leaving several injured. Two students sustained serious head injuries and were admitted to the ICU at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
NIT Director Dilip Kumar Baidya said the students have been suspended for one academic year and removed from hostel facilities. “Our investigation confirmed their role in the violence. They will now be sent back to Bangladesh,” he added.
During a hostel search, authorities also recovered narcotics in the students’ possession. Dean of Students’ Welfare S. S. Dhar noted that while the main disciplinary action was for violent conduct, the suspected possession of drugs was also taken into account.
A senior ICCR official from Guwahati reviewed the inquiry and endorsed the disciplinary measures taken by the institute.
