Guwahati, Nov 17: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district is witnessing an early influx of migratory birds with the onset of winter, attracting species from Europe, America, and the Tibetan region.

The sanctuary, renowned for hosting the highest density of one-horned rhinoceroses in India, has seen the arrival of these birds since early November, drawing both domestic and international tourists.

According to sanctuary authorities, around 69 species of migratory birds were recorded in Pobitora last year, up from 56 species in the previous season. Range Officer Pranjal Baruah stated that the tourist season began on October 23, and visitor numbers along with bird activity have been steadily increasing.

“Tourist arrivals have already begun, and migratory birds started reaching Pobitora from the first week of November. We expect more species in the coming days,” Baruah said. The sanctuary recorded about 35,000 visitors last season, generating revenue of Rs 62 lakh.

Forest staff continue regular patrolling inside and around the sanctuary to ensure safety and conservation. The 2022 rhino census reported 107 one-horned rhinos in Pobitora, including 30 males, 50 females, and 27 calves.

The growing presence of migratory birds, along with its rhino population, highlights Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary’s importance as a key winter habitat and a major tourist destination in Assam.
