Assam Police apprehended a man from Cachar district for allegedly posing as a doctor and running an illegal clinic in the Sonai area, officials said on Tuesday.
According to Partha Protim Das, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Cachar, a police team acted on credible input and detained the accused on Monday from Nagdirgram Part-4 village under the Sonai police station. Essential documents were seized from the site, and legal action has been initiated, he said.
The police revealed that the man was part of a larger network engaged in issuing fake medical degrees and certificates through an unrecognised institution lacking approval from the National Medical Council and other authorities. Investigations found that the institution had provided fabricated degrees to several individuals who then practiced medicine without qualifications.
A senior official said the accused was the mastermind of the fake medical syndicate, accused of exploiting public health for personal financial gain. His actions, the official noted, have seriously undermined trust in the medical system and endangered community health.
The man has been taken into police custody, and a detailed investigation is underway to trace others linked to the illegal network.
