Assam Police have arrested a 27-year-old man from Nagaon district for uploading a controversial and edited video on social media related to the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on X that the accused, Md Injamul Hoque, son of Late Rowsot Uddin from Telia Bebejia under Juria Police Station, was detained for posting the video on his Facebook account under the name SK Ahmad on October 15. The video reportedly contained inflammatory content concerning Garg’s sudden demise.

During questioning, Hoque admitted to editing and uploading the video after obtaining the original footage from an OTT platform. He allegedly altered the video and added provocative material before sharing it online.

Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, allegedly while swimming, just a day before his scheduled performance at the Northeast India Festival. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) stated that preliminary investigations do not indicate foul play and urged people not to circulate unverified information. The ongoing investigation is being conducted under Singapore’s Coroners Act, 2010, with findings to be presented to the State Coroner.

In a related development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met Garg’s family members on Friday to offer condolences, calling the late musician “like Kanchenjunga — steadfast and beautiful” and appealing for a transparent investigation.

Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the Crime Investigation Department (CID) produced two accused — Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta — before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Guwahati. Earlier, five other accused in the case were sent to judicial custody.
