The Assam Police have launched a sweeping crackdown on the illegal sale of beef across the state, conducting coordinated raids in multiple districts under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021. The law prohibits the slaughter of cattle and sale of beef near temples and in majority-Hindu areas.
Raids were carried out in districts including Kokrajhar, South Kamrup, Guwahati, Nagaon, and Dibrugarh, resulting in the seizure of both cooked and uncooked meat suspected to be beef. In Kokrajhar alone, four hotels were searched. Along NH-17 in South Kamrup, authorities detained two individuals while several others fled during the operation.
This enforcement drive follows recent tensions during Eid, where 16 people were arrested for alleged illegal cattle slaughter. The Chief Minister has reiterated that while religious freedoms are respected, violations of the law will face strict action.
