Guwahati, May 13: Assam Police seized a massive consignment of foreign-made cigarettes and arrested two individuals during a search operation in the Lalmati area of Guwahati on Sunday night, officials said on Monday.
Acting on a secret input, Basistha Police intercepted an LP truck reportedly carrying cement and observed that a large quantity of foreign cigarettes was being offloaded into a Tata Intra pickup van. Two persons, identified as Chandan Barman (48) and Pranjal Das (25), were apprehended at the spot.
According to Rajib Saikia, Chief Public Relations Officer of Assam Police, the suspects failed to produce valid documents for the consignment. Police seized 798 packets of ESSE Light Slim Cigarettes, manufactured under the authority of KT & G, Korea. Each packet contains 10 boxes, with 20 sticks per box, amounting to a total of 1,59,600 cigarette sticks.
The LP truck and Tata Intra pickup van used in the transportation were also seized.
Further investigation is underway.
