Guwahati, April 3: As the April 9, 2026, assembly elections approach, the newly formed No. 36 Guwahati Central constituency has emerged as a focal point of Assam’s political landscape. BJP candidate Vijay Kumar Gupta has promised to establish mini stadiums in every ward of the Guwahati assembly constituency, placing youth empowerment at the center of his campaign.
“Our youth energy is our core driving force and we are committed to guiding that energy in the right path,” Gupta wrote on social media.
The No. 36 Guwahati Central constituency has emerged as one of the most closely watched races in Assam. Here, youth is challenging experience, regional identity is pushing back against national politics, and a first-time candidate is taking on a seasoned party veteran.
Gupta, who has served as the BJP’s State General Secretary, Vice President, and a long-time core committee member, represents the party’s organizational strength and continuity. His opponent, Kunki Chowdhury, a 27-year-old candidate from the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), embodies a reformist alternative and the aspirations of a younger generation.
At its heart, the contest is a generational battle, reflecting broader questions about the direction of urban Assam. The outcome will not only decide the future of Guwahati Central but may also signal the evolving balance between experience and aspiration in the state’s politics.
