Guwahati, April 4: A high-level delegation of foreign representatives from various international election management bodies is set to visit Assam on April 8 to witness the state’s upcoming assembly elections. The two-day visit, organized under the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP), includes representatives from Angola, Bhutan, Egypt, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Benin, and Croatia.
The initiative is designed to provide international observers with a first-hand understanding of India’s electoral processes, showcasing the scale and transparency of the democratic exercise. On the first day of their visit, the delegates will be briefed by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) regarding the state’s poll preparedness and will visit dispatch centers and control rooms to observe field-level logistics.
On polling day, April 9, the delegation will visit multiple polling stations across various districts to monitor voting procedures, security arrangements, and the implementation of election technologies. Elections for the 126-member Assam assembly are scheduled for a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes set to take place on May 4. The visit by these international delegates underscores the global interest in the region’s democratic transition and the Election Commission’s commitment to maintaining a free and fair polling environment.
