Guwahati, April 6: Authorities in Assam have restricted vehicular movement along the India–Bhutan border from Monday evening in view of the upcoming assembly elections, officials said.
Tamulpur District Magistrate and District Election Officer Simi Karan issued an order imposing restrictions at all entry and exit routes from 5 pm, in line with directives from the Election Commission of India to close international land borders ahead of polling.
The restrictions will remain in force until the end of the polling process on April 9.
According to the order, relaxations will be provided for medical emergencies involving people from Bhutan, Indian citizens or foreign tourists who have already entered Bhutan with valid documents, tourists travelling to Bhutan with proper travel papers, and voters of Tamulpur and Goreswer constituencies. Vehicles carrying perishable essential commodities will also be allowed passage.
The district administration urged all departments, security agencies, and the public to strictly comply with the directives.
