The Ministry of Education has appointed Professor Amrendra Kumar Das, currently from the Department of Design at IIT Guwahati, Assam, as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, effective until further orders.

An official communication dated December 31, 2025, from the Department of Higher Education states that Prof. Das’s appointment will adhere to the provisions of the Tezpur University Act, Statutes, and Ordinances, with approval from the competent authority.

The appointment comes after the ministry constituted an Enquiry Committee to investigate the ongoing crisis at Tezpur University, including allegations against Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh, who has been directed to proceed on leave until the probe concludes.

The committee will be chaired by Prof. N Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, and includes Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, and Prof. Manish R. Joshi, Secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Under Section 9 of the Tezpur University Act, 1993, the committee will review the Fact-Finding Committee report, examine the circumstances behind recent resignations and leadership changes, visit the campus, consult stakeholders, and examine relevant records. The committee is required to submit its findings within three months, and university authorities have been instructed to provide full cooperation.
