Guwahati, Nov 12: A retired school principal from Assam’s Cachar district was detained on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to politicise the recent Delhi blast through a social media post, police said.
Nazrul Islam Barbhuiyan, a resident of Rongpur in Silchar and former principal of Banskandi NMHS School, was questioned after he commented “elections are coming ahead” on a post about the Delhi blast.
Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das said the police took suo motu cognisance of the matter and detained Barbhuiyan to examine the motive and potential impact of his remark. “Such comments can mislead the public or provoke unnecessary speculation on a national security issue,” he added.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the trend of insensitive posts following the Delhi explosion, noting that some users even celebrated the incident online. “Are they sympathetic to terrorists? We will act strictly against such behaviour,” Sarma said.
The Delhi blast, which occurred near the Red Fort metro station on Monday evening, killed 12 people and injured several others. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and relief for the injured.
