In a major joint operation, Assam Police and Assam Rifles seized a large consignment of drugs and contraband in Cachar district, including 10,000 Yaba tablets and 1.25 lakh packets of Esse Light cigarettes, with an estimated black market value of around ₹8 crore.
Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta said the operation was conducted on October 11 based on specific intelligence about the movement of narcotic substances along the Assam–Manipur border under Lakhipur Police Station. During a riverine operation on the Barak River near Jakuradhar, authorities intercepted a country-made boat carrying the suspected items. The search was carried out in the presence of independent witnesses.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the contraband was smuggled from Churachandpur in Manipur. The case is currently under investigation.
In a separate incident on October 9, Cachar Police recovered 21,600 bottles of ESKUF cough syrup, valued at ₹2.16 crore, from a truck at Madhura Point in Rongpur under Silchar Police Station. Acting on intelligence, the team intercepted a vehicle traveling from Kolkata to Tripura and found 36 drums containing several cartons of the cough syrup.
Two suspects from West Bengal, Bapi Halder (45) and Tapash Biswas (42), were taken into custody. The seizure was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, and further investigation is ongoing.
