Guwahati, May 27: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of Justice Ashutosh Kumar, currently the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, as the next Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
The recommendation comes following the Collegium’s proposal to elevate the present Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Justice Vijay Bishnoi, to the Supreme Court.
Justice Kumar began his legal career after enrolling as an advocate with the Patna High Court on July 9, 1991. He completed his schooling at St. Michael’s High School, Patna, graduated from St. Stephen’s College under Delhi University, and earned his LL.B. from the Campus Law Centre at Delhi University.
He was appointed as an additional judge of the Patna High Court on May 15, 2014, and was later transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he took oath on January 7, 2015. He was made a permanent judge on April 21, 2016, and transferred back to the Patna High Court on November 21, 2017.
Justice Kumar has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court since January 2025.
