All government and provincialised schools in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district, including Guwahati, will remain closed from December 31, 2025, to January 6, 2026, due to an intense cold wave, according to an order issued by the district administration.
The decision was taken in view of prevailing weather conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting a sharp drop in temperatures. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature in Guwahati was recorded at 18.1 degrees Celsius, around 6.4 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 15.1 degrees Celsius. The IMD has forecast cloudy conditions, light rain or drizzle, and shallow fog at isolated places in the district until Thursday.
The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that the closure applies to government and provincialised schools to ensure the safety and well-being of students. Normal academic activities are scheduled to resume on January 7, 2026.
The Inspector of Schools, Kamrup Metropolitan district, has directed school authorities to inform students, parents, and staff about the closure, suspend all school-related activities during this period, and make necessary arrangements for a smooth reopening after the holidays.
Private schools have been advised to take a decision on closures independently, based on local conditions.
According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation over Northeast Assam at about 1.5 km above mean sea level is contributing to the current cold and cloudy weather conditions across the region.
