Guwahati, May 22: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said the state government has approached a Supreme Court-appointed committee over ongoing hill cutting in neighbouring Meghalaya, which he claimed is a major contributor to recurring waterlogging in Guwahati.
Speaking at a press conference in Dergaon, Golaghat district, Sarma warned that if such activities continue, “Guwahati will become an ocean.”
He also highlighted the challenges posed by urbanisation, stating that artificial floods in cities like Guwahati are difficult to avoid as “empty plots are filled up each year with new constructions,” reducing the city’s natural drainage capacity.
