The Sixth Schedule Protection Committee has urged the Assam government to release the report of the One-Man Inquiry Commission formed to investigate the Umrangso coal mine tragedy, which claimed nine lives in January this year.
The commission, headed by retired Gauhati High Court judge Justice Anima Hazarika, was set up to probe the incident involving the deaths of nine labourers trapped inside an illegal rat-hole coal mine in the Umrangso area of Dima Hasao district.
Daniel Langthasa, Convenor of the Sixth Schedule Protection Committee and former member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), called for the immediate release of the report, stressing the need for transparency and justice. He alleged that illegal mining activities have continued in the district for years and demanded strict action against those responsible.
“The report should be made public immediately so that justice can be delivered to the victims and the image of Dima Hasao and Assam can be restored,” Langthasa said.
He also urged the government to take steps to stop the reopening of illegal mines and ensure accountability.
The Assam government has not yet commented on the timeline for releasing the inquiry report.
