In a recent development, the Assam government has enacted a new regulation that places restrictions on its employees entering into a second marriage without obtaining prior consent from the state government.
The directive was formally announced by IAS Niraj Verma, the Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, through an official order released on a Thursday.
According to the newly implemented policy, any government employee found to be in violation of this rule by engaging in bigamy will face certain repercussions. The regulation specifies that employees who enter into a second marriage without the government’s permission will be subject to a fine.
Additionally, they will be subjected to a departmental inquiry as per the directive.
The official order issued by the Assam government states, “No government servant who has a wife living shall contract another marriage without first obtaining the permission of the Government, notwithstanding that such subsequent marriage is permissible under the personal law for the time being applicable to him.”
