Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the Assam Police is preparing to file the charge sheet in the case concerning the death of singer Zubeen Garg by December 12. A Special Investigation Team under the Criminal Investigation Department is conducting the probe, following the registration of more than 60 FIRs across the state.

According to officials, the SIT has gathered around 3,500 documents during the investigation. Sarma said the team has consulted the advocate general to finalise the details and aims to submit the charge sheet before the December 18 deadline.

Zubeen Garg died on September 19 in Singapore while swimming in the sea during the 4th edition of the North East India Festival. In the Assam Assembly on November 26, the Chief Minister termed the incident a “plain and simple murder.”

Police have arrested several individuals in connection with the case, including NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta, and Garg’s cousin, Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg. Two Police Security Officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, were also arrested after the detection of financial transactions exceeding Rs 1.1 crore from their accounts.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Force continues its separate investigation. A preliminary report issued on October 17 found no evidence of foul play and noted that the complete investigation could take up to three more months before being submitted to the State Coroner.
