Guwahati, Feb 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Rs 3,000-crore Kumar Bhaskar Varma bridge over the Brahmaputra river on Saturday, a project expected to significantly enhance urban mobility and regional connectivity in Assam.

The 1.24-km, six-lane extradosed bridge India’s first of its kind in the Northeast links Guwahati and North Guwahati across one of the country’s most challenging riverine terrains.

Rohit Singla, director of SPS Construction India, the executing agency, described the bridge as a “significant engineering achievement” that will reduce travel times, ease congestion, and facilitate smoother movement for commuters, freight, and long-distance travelers.

“This modern extradosed design offers strength, durability, and faster construction over the Brahmaputra’s wide span,” Singla told PTI, highlighting the project’s adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards.

The bridge connects key transport corridors, supports Assam’s infrastructure plans, and provides improved access to national institutions and cultural landmarks in North Guwahati. A senior state government official said the bridge would act as a catalyst for developing North Guwahati as a twin city, promoting growth across the capital region.

Singla added that the structure is expected to serve the mobility needs of the Northeast for years, with continued efforts to maximize long-term benefits for residents and businesses.
