Assam: Two Constables Arrested For Rape Attempt On Mentally Challenged Woman Inside Sribhumi Jail

Guwahati, May 24: Two police constables have been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a mentally challenged woman inside the Sribhumi district jail premises in Assam on Friday night.

According to Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, the accused constables — Hareshwar Kalita and Brojendra Kalita — reportedly called the woman to the jail quarters, where the attempted assault took place.

Jail security personnel, acting on suspicion, intervened and caught the two constables in the act. Both were immediately detained. The victim was rescued from the spot and taken for medical examination.

SP Das confirmed that the woman has undergone medical tests and the accused are currently held at Sribhumi Police Station. An investigation is in progress and legal action has been initiated.

Additional SP Headquarters Pranabjyoti Kalita stated that the incident was reported between 1:00 and 1:30 am. Inspector Debananda Dutta and Sub-Inspector Rana Deb responded to the alert and arrested the accused. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage in the district, with calls for strict and swift action.
