The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has faced a setback ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections as its youth wing general secretary, Sangrang Brahma, resigned from the party.
In his resignation letter to the party president, Brahma alleged that the party leadership has failed to provide space and recognition to the younger generation in the candidate selection process. He expressed disappointment over a “mismatch in ideology and functioning” within the party.
Brahma specifically criticized the nomination of Kampa Borgoyari from the Chirang Duar constituency, terming it a “serious insult” to grassroots workers and the public. Borgoyari, who served as Deputy Chief Executive Member of BTC during the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) regime, had previously lost the same seat contesting on a BPF ticket.
“Due to this mismatch in ideology and functioning, I am resigning from the party,” Brahma stated.
The resignation comes at a critical time for UPPL, which heads the ruling coalition in BTC with support from the BJP and Gana Suraksha Party (GSP). The BPF remains the main opposition in the region. Earlier this month, UPPL’s central body secretary, Boddhadeb Mushahary, also stepped down citing personal reasons. The BTC elections are scheduled for September 22, and UPPL has already announced 16 candidates, including Borgoyari.
