Tension flared in Baksa district on Wednesday when police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse a mob that attacked vehicles transporting five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case to Baksa Central Jail.
According to officials, protesters pelted stones at the convoy as it reached the Mussalpur jail premises, shattering vehicle windows and injuring several people, including a policewoman. A few journalists covering the incident were also caught in the stone-throwing.
The crowd, demanding that the accused be handed over to them to ensure “justice for Zubeen,” attempted to breach the security cordon at the jail gates, leading to scuffles with police. Despite repeated appeals to disperse, the mob pressed forward, prompting security personnel to use force to restore order. Senior officers later camped at the site, and security was tightened in and around the prison.
Earlier in the day, the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate remanded festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, his cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg, and personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya to judicial custody.
Citing safety concerns, the court directed that the accused be lodged in a facility with fewer inmates. Authorities subsequently shifted them to the newly inaugurated Baksa Central Jail, which currently has no other prisoners.
