Renowned Assamese fashion designer Sanjukta Dutta paid tribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on National Handloom Day by presenting a handwoven angavastra bearing his portrait. The annual celebration on August 7 recognises India’s traditional weaving heritage and the contributions of its artisan community.

The angavastra, made from Mulberry silk and Muga, took around 20 days to complete and was woven by skilled artisans who worked closely with Dutta. According to Dutta, “This creation is not just a tribute to the Prime Minister, but also a mark of deep respect to the weavers of India.”

Dutta’s designs have gained international recognition, showcasing Assam’s traditional silk, particularly Muga and Pat silk, on global platforms like London Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week. Her signature collection, “Chiki-Miki,” featuring exquisite Pat-Muga creations, received widespread acclaim at Paris Fashion Week.

Her work serves as an inspiration to aspiring designers and artisans, promoting the rich cultural legacy of India’s handloom sector.
