Guwahati, May 15: Dr. Bibhuti Prasad Lahkar, a noted conservationist from Assam, was presented with the Mark Shand Award by Queen Camilla at a special charity event held at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. The award recognises his significant contributions to Asian elephant conservation and his long-standing efforts to reduce human-elephant conflict in Assam, particularly in Manas National Park.
The award ceremony was part of “Wonders of the Wild: An Evening of Art and Conservation”, organised by the Elephant Family, a wildlife charity founded by Queen Camilla’s late brother, Mark Shand. The event was attended by King Charles, members of the royal family, and several international celebrities.
Dr. Lahkar, associated with the Assam-based NGO Aaranyak, was acknowledged for his grassroots conservation work. His colleague, Bibhab Talukdar, praised the recognition, highlighting Lahkar’s dedication and sincerity over three decades of service.
The evening also featured the conclusion of the Big Egg Hunt, a fundraising initiative showcasing 123 artist-designed egg sculptures across London landmarks. The event highlighted partnerships with Indian organisations such as Aaranyak and the Balipara Foundation, both working to protect elephants and their habitats in Assam.
